What is semi-formal attire? A dress code guide for women and men

Semi-formal attire means dressed up but not formal: a knee-length or midi dress, a dressy jumpsuit or a skirt or trousers with an elegant top for women, and a suit for men, with a tie in the evening. It sits just below cocktail and also covers daytime events, so fabrics and colours can be lighter. Gowns and tuxedos are too much; jeans and trainers are too little.

Semi-formal compared with the codes around it

Semi-formal is the code people misread most, because the word sounds like half of formal. It is not half a tuxedo: it is a suit and a dress, chosen for the time of day.

The closest neighbour is cocktail attire. The two overlap; cocktail is an evening code and leans dressier, while semi-formal stretches from a midday ceremony to a dinner. The full ladder is in how to read a dress code.

Semi-formal attire for women

A dress is the classic answer, but separates and jumpsuits are just as correct when the fabric and shoes are dressy.

Separates are fully semi-formal when the fabric and the shoes are dressy.
  • Dresses: knee to midi; a wrap, sheath or A-line in crepe, silk, satin or fine knit.
  • Separates: tailored or wide-leg trousers, or a midi skirt, with a silk blouse or a fine top.
  • Jumpsuits: tailored, in a fabric with weight; not denim or jersey.
  • Shoes: heels, slingbacks, dressy flats or sleek ankle boots in winter.
  • Layers: a tailored blazer or a fine wrap — a puffer over a dress breaks the look at the door.

Semi-formal attire for men

Semi-formal for men means a suit. The choice is how dark and how formal, and that depends on the hour.

  • Suit: navy or charcoal works day and night; lighter grey, blue or beige in the day and in summer.
  • Shirt: a dress shirt in white or light blue; patterns should be subtle.
  • Tie: the safe choice in the evening; optional for a daytime or outdoor event.
  • Shoes: leather oxfords, derbies or loafers, polished, with a belt to match.
  • A blazer with tailored trousers is at the lower edge of the code: fine for a dinner, not for a wedding.

Day versus evening

The same invitation reads differently at noon and at eight. In the day, go lighter: cotton-silk, linen blends and fine wool, softer or brighter colours, prints, and lower heels or loafers. In the evening, go deeper: darker colours, satin, velvet or crepe, more polish in the shoes and a little shine in the accessories.

When the event runs from afternoon into evening — a wedding with a ceremony at three and a dinner at seven — dress for the evening and lighten it with colour, or bring a layer that changes the mood.

Semi-formal for a wedding, a dinner or a school dance

Wedding: semi-formal is a common wedding code. Avoid white and ivory, mirror the venue — garden, restaurant or hall — and choose comfortable shoes for the reception; the occasion guide what to wear to a wedding as a guest has the checklist.

Dinner or a work event: a semi-formal dinner is a step above a dinner date — a dress or tailored separates, a suit for men.

School dance or graduation: semi-formal there usually means a knee-length dress or a jumpsuit, and a suit or a blazer with trousers; check the school's own rules on length and straps.

In every case, colour does more for you than the label on the code. In You Love Style one photo gives you your palette, a capsule and ready looks for the occasions you pick, with a try-on on your own photo and a marketplace search for every piece.

Questions readers ask

  • Is semi-formal the same as cocktail attire?

Almost. Both mean a suit or a knee-to-midi dress. Cocktail is an evening code and leans dressier; semi-formal also covers daytime events, where lighter suits and fabrics are fine.

  • Can women wear trousers to a semi-formal event?

Yes. Tailored or wide-leg trousers with a silk blouse, or a tailored jumpsuit, are fully semi-formal when the fabric and shoes are dressy.

  • Do men need a tie for semi-formal?

In the evening, a tie is the safe choice. At a daytime or outdoor event a suit with an open collar is usually fine unless the invitation or the host says otherwise.

  • Can I wear a long dress to a semi-formal event?

A simple maxi in a light fabric can work, especially in summer or outdoors. A formal floor-length gown reads black tie and is too much for semi-formal.
